DORR, Benjamin; and Ferdinand J. DREER (collector). A Memoir of John Fanning Watson.
Philadelphia: Collins, 1861. 8vo (232 x 160 mm). profusely extra-illustrated by ferdinand j. dreer. Includes over 125 inserted illustrations, including engravings, original photographs, autograph letters signed, original illustrations, colonial currency and more. Early full levant morocco gilt, slipcase. Condition: spine darkened and abraded. Provenance: Ferdinand J. Dreer. an extraordinary copy of the first biography of watson, "grangerized" with photographs by philadelphia antiquary ferdinand j. dreer. Among the illustrations, each neatly inlaid to size, are the usual historical views and portraits, but also a good number of original portraits or scenic albumen photographs (approx. 25). Among those pictured are Watson, Dorr, Dreer, John McAllister Jr. (and with a photograph of the interior of his optician shop, as well as one of his residence), Benson Lossing, Samuel F. Smith and more; photographic views include two of Stenton, the Arlington House (with Union soldiers on the front steps), the interior of the Zion Lutheran Church, and more. Interestingly, included also are photographs of prints, a creative way to reduce larger prints to a size to be included in the book. The volume includes letters by Watson, Dorr, Smith, Henry Gilpin, Lavinia Whitman, Samuel Breck, and others. Sabin 20637.
