KIEHN, Jacob. Fairmount. Philadelphia: J. Kiehn, 1867. Chromolithograph by J. Bien (405 x 530 mm). Condition: tissue-backed, some repairs to tears, light creasing, toning. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "Jacob Kiehn's 1867 view from Fairmount documents the bustling activity on the river. Steamboats dock at Landing Avenue. Along the east bank of the river, at the base of Lemon Hill, stand the boathouses of the Schuylkill Navy and the Skating Club. Ice houses, factories, and warehouses line the river's west banks. As had earlier artists, Kiehn portrayed these industrial and technological activites as benign additions to a pastoral setting" (Philadelphia's Cultural Landscape, p. 81). Martinez and Talbot, eds.
