CENTENNIAL - David AMES. Centennial. 1776-1876. Brooklyn, New York: James Miller, 1876. Lithograph (400 x 590 mm). Condition: tissue repairs to tears, lightly soiled. This lithograph presents historical events in the American Revolution and Civil War at the time of the 1876 Centennial Celebration. The top banner depicts the Main Hall in Philadelphia behind an eagle. Within the lettering of "Centennial" are the state seals of the original 13 colonies. In the center are two views of the same landscape, the 1776 land sparsley populated with farmers and Native Americans while an 1876 view of the same land is built up with houses, tall buildings, several bridges, and ships on the rivers. Flanking the central images are two large ovals, the right printed with a portrait of George Washington and a reprint of the Declaration of Independance while the left depicts Lincon and the text of the Emancipation Proclamation. Around the borders complementary scenes are across from one another, for instance the Battle of Bunker Hill and Gettysburg, a slave auction and black school, and the surrender of Cornwallis with the visit of Lafyette in 1824. As a reminder of Philadelphia, Independence Hall is depicted as is Benjamin Franklin's printing press.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
