Flown Apollo 15 Robbins Medallion
Description
Flown Apollo 15 35mm Sterling Silver Robbins Medallion
(#044) complete with it original Robbins plastic case. 304 medallions were designed by Emilio Pucci ( his initials are visible near the bottom); 127 of these medallions, produced from an ingot of silver salvaged from a Spanish galleon that sank near Cape Canaveral, were flown. Beautifully sculpted and engraved, the obverse depicts three "wings" flying in formation over the lunar surface, representing the three astronauts flying over the actual landing site. The "top" wing represents the command module pilot, while the lower two represent the two crew members that landed on the moon. The reverse side bears Air Force wings (the entire crew were Air Force veterans) as well as the mission number, the names of the spacecraft (Falcon and Endeavor) and the nameof the lunar landing site. The 127 flown medallions are easily identified, because the landing site is incorrectly spelled as “Apennines." This medallion has been in the Scott family possession since the flight of Apollo 15. A similar item from David Scott’s collection realized over $5,000 in our October 2002 auction. Ex: Scott Family Collection.
