Provenance: From a Washington, DC estate. Note: John Adlum (1759-1836) was born in York, PA and served in the American Provisional Army during the American Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of major by its conclusion. After the war Adlum was promoted to Brigadier General in the Pennsylvania Militia, and worked as a surveyor and associate judge. Later he created a 200-acre farm and nursery at Georgetown, Washington, DC, where he pioneered the cultivation and science of American grapes. He received valuable assistance in his field through his copious correspondence with Thomas Jefferson. Condition reportA very good tight copy, front hinge broken but not detached, spine with chipping and small loss to top and bottom, cover with normal scuffs and bumped corners, upper corner torn off (into first few lines of text) of pp. 221/222 and 223/224 but present. Possible printing defect at end of subscribers (ii-viii), which is followed by an extra unrelated page vii, and then ix/x
