John Rutter (Am., 20th c.), Lovers at the Well,
egg tempera on panel with self-painted frame, signed "J. H. Rutter." 12" dia. Rutter was born in Baltimore, Maryland on May 17, 1911, one of three sons of a middle class family. His secondary education was at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, followed by studies at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts, as well as the University of Rochester (1935-1936) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (1937-1939). He served in the armed forces from 1940 through 1945 and was stationed in French Morocco and Italy. After the war, he entered the School of Art at Yale and received his B.F.A. in 1949. After leaving Yale, he entered Syracuse University to pursue an advanced degree. The latter part of his life was spent living and working in the vicinity of Pittsboro N.C. At Yale Rutter would have been exposed to the teachings of Daniel V. Thompson who published his "Practice of Tempera Painting" in 1936, a modern adaption of Cennino Cennini's "Craftsman's Handbook" known from a Florentine manuscript of 1390. This work was very influential at the time and led to many American artists of the period, most notably Paul Cadmus and Jared French, turning from oil paints to egg tempera.
