Jack Tworkov (NY/MA, 1900-1982), Self Portrait,
mixed media on Whatman's artist board, unsigned, inscribed on the verso "Jack Tworkov / Self portrait - / gift to Ned Cornish / Aug. 1950 / 318 E 19th St. / NYC," unframed. Jack Tworkov surrounded himself with some of the most respected Abstract Expressionists during the 1940s and 1950s including Willem DeKooning and Frank Kline. He also played an important role is serving as mentor for artists such as Chuck Close, Jennifer Bartlet, Nancy Graves, and Robert Mangold. Tworkov held teaching postions at numerous fine institutions, including a brief summer stint in 1952 at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Tworkov's works has long been revered for its refined structure and controlled coloring. He used portraits and still lives to maintain his skills and particularly self-portraits, such as this, because "the only reason I do self-portraits is because no one would sit for me as patiently as I sit for myself."
