Albert Rosenthal (PA/NY, 1863-1939), Portrait,
oil on canvas, signed and dated at upper left corner "Albert Rosenthal / 1934," inscribed on the verso "Sallie Faison / (Mrs. Thomas B. Pierce) / Painted for her Daughter / Mrs. Daniel M. Shaw Brooks / 1934," housed in a hand-carved and gilt wood frame with incised signature "F. Coll" (for Frank Coll). Likely painted from a photograph taken in the 1870s, Mrs. Sallie Faison Pierce is connected to two prominent North Carolina families - the Pierces and Faisons of Duplin County. Sallie Eliza Faison married Thomas Buck Pierce in 1873 and they settled in Warsaw, where they raised their large family. Albert Rosenthal was a noted portrait artist who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Academie Julian, the l'École des Beaux-Arts under Jean Leon Gérôme, and in Munich. He was also a member of numerous important artist organizations including the Salmagundi Club and the Washington Art Club. Throughout his career he received important portrait commissions and continued to receive accolades for his works. Frank Coll (Francis A. Coll) was an accomplished framemaker working in Wilmington, Delaware from the 1920s through the 1960s. He was friends with N. C. Wyeth and provided him with both frames and advice on several of Wyeth's works. The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, PA held an exhibit entitled "Carved by Frank Coll" in 2001.
