William Forbes Coin Silver Kettle on Stand,
retailed by Storr & Mortimer (New York, NY), bears maker's mark, retailer's mark, and "New York" in rectangular punch. Exuberant Rococo Revival kettle with cast floral finial, acanthus scrolled decoration to kettle and stand, stand raised on three acanthus and shell motif legs, engraved "N" monogram to stand. William Forbes was a member of the prominent Forbes silversmithing family of New York. A beautiful example of silver, this piece is particularly important because it also bears the retailer's mark of "Storr & Mortimer." The legendary English silversmith, Paul Storr, and his business partner John Mortimer, opened a New York outlet in 1840. Unfortunately they were only in business for three years, shutting their doors less than a year after Congress enacted the Tariff of 1842 which increased the ad valorem tax on imported silverware. 55.25 total troy ozs. 11.75" Estimate: $1500 - 2500 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
