James Whitcomb Riley (1849 - 1916),
signed cabinet card inscribed, "Indianapolis, Indiana; October '92 / When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock, / Yours Truly / James Whitcomb Riley." Lower front margin imprinted by Bowen Merrill Company of Indianapolis, verso imprinted with a listing of Riley's works. The hugely popular subject of this portrait was affectionately known as "The Hoosier Poet" for his heartwarming verse in Indiana dialect.
