Description
FLOWN Broad Band X-Ray Telescope
This Broad Band X-ray Telescope (BBXRT) was actually FLOWN on the space shuttle Columbia (STS-35) on 1990 December 2-December 11, as part of the ASTRO-1 scientific mission payload. This BBXRT (the only one ever constructed) was built at the Goddard Flight Center's Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics at a cost of over $40,000,000 and is the single largest and most sophisticated scientific instrument ever flown aboard any U.S. space shuttle and subsequently offered for sale.During STS-35, the BBXRT was used to acquire scientific data of historical importance on approximately eighty cosmic X-ray sources, including stars, cataclysmic variables, X-ray binaries, active galaxies and supernovas. (Please note that this telescope can only be used for observation outside the Earth's atmosphere.) The BBXRT was in orbit for almost exactly nine days. It was powered up three hours after launch and remained so until approximately six hours before reentry. The detector system collected data for that entire time; and once the parameters for the CID aspect camera processing were fine-tuned, the instrument behaved virtually flawlessly. The NASA websites contain an abundance of information about the BBXRT and its remarkable scientific achievements. Some of the data collected on the mission is on display at the Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.;others may soon be exhibited in the James S. McDonnell III and John F. McDonnell Space Hanger at the new Steven Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum at Dulles, Virginia. The telescope measures approximately twelve by four feet and with the support system, and weighs about twelve hundred pounds. (The lot does not include the keel support structure used to anchor the telescope to the shuttle, nor does it include the transport and support structure/dolly depicted in the photograph.). Some flaws resulting from use; they do not detract from this magnificent flown piece of museum-quality, FLOWN hardware. Absolutely unique and an important historical artifact. Buyer must arrange for professional packing and shipping. Also, off-site viewing must be arranged.
