Flown Shuttle Payload and Gen.l Pur. Support Comp. (PGSC)
(11.5x15x2", NASA S/N 1025) "This is a modified version of a commercial laptop computer manufactured by Grid Systems, Inc. It was chosen because of its metal case and construction that was more rugged than most laptops. Modifications were made to adapt it for use in space by SAI Technology, a division of SAIC. Grid laptops are characterized by their use of a metal case, a bright, electro luminescent display and a mass memory that does not use mechanically rotating disks-all of which makes them more rugged, although heavier, than other brands. SAI Technology modified the computer by removing the battery, reconfiguring the power supply to the 400 cycle AC power used on the Shuttle, attaching Velcro fasteners, removing or modifying any pieces that might "outgas" hazardous or toxic gasses and loading specialized software. The Space Shuttle uses a set of five on-board computers to perform critical operations regarding engine burn, attitude, and other functions. While on orbit, one of the computer's primary uses is to schedule and control the many experiments that are carried. Typically these experiments require a member of the crew to turn on a device, then perhaps activate a data recorder a few hours later, turn on or off a heater, monitor the experiment to ensure its systems are working properly and finally to shut it down when it is finished. This computer has numerous blue Velcro tags as well as all NASA ID numbers, a Class III "Not for Flight" label (placed on equipment when NASA not longer needs it), and even comes in a NASA laptop carrying case with custom red ID label on the side. NASA ID number records show that this computer was flown on STS-37, STS-39 and STS-48. The NASA ID tag shows that this computer cost NASA over $40,000 to purchase. This computer will be an important addition to any collection.
