Title: Civil War Soldier's Ballot & Power of Attorney
Printing Year: 1864 Condition/Details: This collection of antique documents is a scarce record of the mechanisms existing during the Civil War for men serving in the military to exercise their rights as electors. The soldier in question, Michael Lynch, resident of the town of Bergen, in Genesee County, New York, filled out and signed the form printed on the front of the ballot envelope, in which a signed Soldier's Power of Attorney and two slips of paper have been placed. One slip lists the candidates for office in the State of New York, the other the Electors of President and Vice President of the United States. Michael Lynch stated on the corresponding forms that he was serving at the time of the November 8th election in Company D of the 18th Regiment Vet Reserve Corps, stationed in Washington D. C. This smaller envelope is contained within a larger one that is marked "Soldier's Vote" in the upper right-hand corner. A short text on the left-hand side reproduces Section 5 of Capter of 253 Laws of 1864 regarding the "Duties of Elector receiving a Soldier's Vote". The documents show light external age/wear, and are clean and bright. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50 ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
