Title: Of Brave Wolf Author: unknown author Printing Year: late 18th century Condition/Details:This antique manuscript is a scarce copy of a historically significant poem dedicated to General James Wolfe, the victor of the battle of the Plains of Abraham. It was during this battle that the British permanently wrested Quebec from France, but it was here that both Wolfe and his French counterpart, Montcalm, met their ends: They died within a few hours of each other of the wounds each received on the battleground. Now both generals are commemorated in the Governor's Garden with a 20-meter obelisk--reputed to be the only monument in the world celebrating both the winner and the loser of a battle. It should be noted that no mention is made in this poem of Montcalm. The ink and paper, as well as the use of the long "S", date it to the last half of the 18th century. We have not been able to ascertain the existence of any other handwritten copy. This may well be an original variant of the poem. The text of the poem is as follows: OF BRAVE WOLF
Chear up you young men all, He landed at Quebec.
Let nothing upright you, Be of a gallant mind, Let that delight you.
Let not your courage fail, Till after trial, Nor let your fancy move, At the first denial.
I went to see my love, Only to woo her, I went to gain her love, Not to undo her.
When 'ere I speak a war, My tongue did quiver. I could not speak my mind, Whilst I was with her.
Hear is a diamond ring, Long time I've kept it. It was for your sake alone, If you wilt accept it.
When you the posy read, Thin on the giver. Madam remember me, Or I'm undon forever.
Brave Wolf then took his leave, Of his dear jewel. Most soarly did she grieve, Saying don't be cruel.
He says tis for aspace, That I leave you, Yet love where ere I gone, I'll not forget you.
O then this gallant youth, Did cross the river, To free America, From her envasion.
With all his party, The city to Attack, Being brave and harty.
Brave Wolf then dress his men, In a form most pretty, On the plains of Abraham, Before the city.
And there before the town, The French did meet them, With double numbers they, Resolve to beat them.
Wolf's men drew in line, For death prepared, Whilst in each other's faces, Their armies stared.
So pleasantly brav Wolf, And Ain marshal between, Their armies walked.
Each one then took his frost, At his retire, And then the numerous host, Began their fire.
Their cannons on each side, Did roar like thunder. The youth in all their pride, Were torn asunder.
The drums did loudly beat, Ballons were flying. The purple goar did stream, And men lay dying.
At a sudden from his horse, Fel this brave hero, And we lament his loss, In fields of sorrow.
The French began to break, Ballons were flying. Brave Wolf seam to awak, As he laying dying.
Brave Wolf lifted up his head, Where the cannons rattled, And to army said, How goes the battle
His aidecamp replies, It is in our favour, Quebec with all her pride, Nothing can save her.
She will fall into her hands, With all her treasure. O then replied brave Wolf, I die with pleasure.
Brave Wolf is new enrold, The first of heros, And join a host of thos, Who feels no sorrow.
