Condition/Details: Bound in blue cloth with bright gilt embossing, this antique volume is a rare nautical work. The author states his objective in the preface: "The Sailor's Pocket Book is an attempt to collect, in a compact form, a series of those practical facts, a thorough and ready knowledge of which tend to secure the success of the mariner and the safety of life and property confided to his charge. Some of the Notes are taken from the excellent works of Seamanship now extant, but the greater number are extracted from the small professional pamphlets, published by or with the approval of the Admiralty, the Board of Trade, and the Meteorological Service. These useful little works are liable from their very form to be, either frequently mislaid, or, seldom at hand for reference when required; and it was more especially as an endeavour to concentrate the information contained in these pamphlets, that this work was commenced." A functioning paper compass serves as frontispiece. The work is illustrated with in-text drawings, charts and diagrams. The volume shows light external age/wear, and has weak hinges with clean pages. The book measures approximately 5" x 6" and contains 363 pages plus 25 blank pages and 3 pages of advertisements. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $4.50
