Title: The Monotypes of Joseph Solman
Publisher: Da Capo Press Printing Year: 1977 Inscribed first edition Condition/Details: Bound in green cloth with bright yellow lettering to spine, this volume is a scarce collection of 41 works by the painter. "The monotype, a single printed impression, is produced by painting a picture or design on a flat suface of glass or metal, and transferring it onto a sheet of paper by means of pressure. More intimately connected to the original sketch than woodcut, etching or lithograph, it combines the spontaneous quality of a drawing, gouache or oil sketch with the magical impress of a fine print. The artist is left a spectator at its birth. Painter Joseph Solman, increasingly fascinated by the monotype, has been developing his own approach to this unique and exciting medium during the past ten years. In creating his arresting and unusual images he employs changing textures, quivering or vibrating lines, and massed silhouettes." (dustjacket text). The work contains an introduction by Una E. Johnson, Curator Emeritus, the Brooklyn Museum, with technical notes by the artist on the making of the prints. The artist and his wife have inscribed both the front endpaper of this book (To John and Coralie, / with love, / Joe + Ruth Solman / Sept. 15, 1985) and a laid-in illustrated triptych announcing a Joseph Solman exhibition entitled "A Retrospective of Portraits from 1929 - 1994", held September 24 to October 15, 1994, at the Mercury Gallery in Boston. This last inscription reads: "Dear Folks / We had a / great time with / you people. I have / almost finished both / jars of your delightful / spread. It was a / real jam session. / Love, / Joe / + from Ruth." Two additional illustrated cards have also been laid in. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. Dustjacket is in glassine cover. The book measures approximately 11.25" x 8.5" and contains unnumbered pages.
