Condition/Details: Bound in original patterned cloth with paper label, this antique volume is a scarce early work on the machining operation. The author states in the introduction: "In the present, which is the Third Edition, the description of the Chuck and SlideRest that appeared in the Second Edition, is left out; and, in leiu thereof, I shall give a description of the identical Slide Rest and Chuck with which all the Specimens I have ever worked out in pure Simple and Compound Eccentric Turning, were actually executed and engraved; and in giving this description I shall pursue the following plan. In the first place I will give a description of the Slide Rest. In the second place I will give some explanation of the origin of the Chuck, and of the causes which induced me to undertake the manufacture of it with my own hands; and I shall also remark on such parts of it as I consider new in their application to such machinery. In the third place I will give a full description of the Chuck, with reference to the copper-plate Engravings which are inserted in front of the title page. In the fourth place, every thing that appeared in the first Edition will be repritned in this Edition; and in the firth place I will give some Specimens illlustrative of the powers of the Chuck which I contrived and constructed myself and have denominated IBBETSON'sS IMPROVED COMPOUND ECCENTRIC CHUCK, with practical instructions for producing some of the Figures." The work is illustrated with 2 engraved folding plates (a little spotted), title with a border of 12 examples as roundels printed white on black, 2 full-page line drawings, 6 copper-engraved plates, 10 full-page plates printed white on black, and numerous small illustrations in the text, all printed white on black. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. The book measures approximately 6" x 9" and contains 176 pages.
