Title: Cars: Their Construction and Handling
Author: Marshall Monroe Kirkman Publisher: Cropley Phillips Company (Chicago) Printing Year: 1921 Condition/Details: Bound in three-quarter red cloth with bright gilt embossing to spine, this antique volume is a scarce title in the "Kirkman's Science of Railways". Title page contains two short texts that read as follows: "This volume describes and illustrated the methods of construction of freight and passenger cars; wooden, composite and steel: their appliances; how handled, safety devices, with the standard rules and regulations connected therewith."; "Note: The Author of "The Science of Railways" served for fifty years as a railway officer and employe (sic). However, in writing "The Science of Railways" and in its many subsequent editions and revisions (to meet the ever changing conditions of the service) he and those interested in the publication of the work, have had throughout, the active advice and aid of practical experts, familiar with every branch of railway operations: men who know. The books are, therefore, authoritative, and are valuable to railway men as standard text books are to Lawyers, Doctors, Civil Engineers and other representative men." Kirkman (1842 - 1921), was indeed an authority on railways, having entered the service of the Chicago and North Western Railway in 1856 and risen to the position of vice-president in 1889. The work is illustrated with many photographs, drawings, and diagrams. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages with marbled edges. The book measures approximately 6" x 7.75" and contains 644 pages plus an advertisement page for "Kirkman's Science of Railways".
