Description
Abstract; lithograph by Joan Miro; Size: 20"x27"; Biography: Joan Miro was born in Barcelona, Spain on April 20, 1893; he was the son of a watchmaker. He studied at the Barcelona Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Gali. Because Spain was not a thriving location for artists, Miro established himself in Paris, France and made friends with Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Ernest Hemingway, max Ernst, and Paul Klee. Miro was the most distinguished painter in Catalina. He was also the most enduring of the Surrealist artists. After his visit to the United States to work on a mural commission in Cincinnati, Ohio, Miro's influence had spread onto American artists such as Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko. The great admired his Surrealist automatism and mysterious primitive symbols and adopted them to their own style. Miro was a prolific artist; he had tried his hand at ceramics, bronze sculpture, printmaking, book illustration, posters, costume design and many more. At 79 years old, he began his series of monumental bronzes, and the following year, he joined forces with a young Spaniard named Josep Royo who was a weaver of tapestries. Miro would spread these works on the floor and begin his process of changing the design, which transformed these pieces of folk art to perhaps masterpieces.
