Description:

Created in 1918, Hommage a Teriade is an original color lithograph by Braque, inspired by his similarly titled oil painting, Candlestick, from 1911. Representative of the analytic cubist style, this print is composed of fascinating multiple planes in deep rich earth tones of brown, gray and black.

Hand signed by Georges Braque (1882 - 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. It is also signed in the plate in the lower left. Published by Teriade of Paris, the edition is numbered 195/200 in the lower left hand side of the work in pencil. Printed on Arches Script watermarked paper, this work is in pristine condition!

While the analytic cubist style is designed to intentionally distort subject matter, Braque does provide the viewer with several very identifiable objects—a snuffed taper candle in the upper middle, and French script in the lower right and center of the print. The candlestick form appears to be replicated throughout the lithograph, as Braque examines this seemingly mundane object from every angle. Braque’s interest in the “everyday” household item—the candlestick—makes the piece charming and intriguing. The highly saturated colors gracefully blend into one another, further merging the planes, and reflecting Braque’s innovative style.
