Description:

Deep incisions into the clay surface produce a tactile experience similar to Picasso's famous linocuts. The rich and saturated black coloration remains fresh through the engobe printing process, and the hand of the artist is clearly visible in the marvelous details throughout the work.

Created in 1964, this rectangular plaque made from red earthenware clay was printed with engobe pad in black. This work contains guaranteed authentic 'Empreinte Originale de Picasso' and 'Madoura' Stamps on the bottom of the base. A large beautiful work that maintains rich black areas, overall in excellent condition!

Like a linocut, the image in this clay plaque is achieved through a deductive process. This means that the image is created from what is left over after portions of the surface are removed. When ink is applied to the surface, it attaches only to the remaining surface level areas, and not to the incised areas-and a beautiful image of a woman emerges from the clay. The printing process in this instance is done with a black engobe pad. Engobe decoration is a highly technical and specialized process where the artist mixes a liquid clay substance and applies it directly to the clay surface. Because the color is actually in the liquid clay, the color remains fresh and richly saturated throughout the life of the piece. This delicate artisan process is best appreciated in person, as the patient and skillful hand of the artist is best visible. Due to the large scale of the work, these fine details can be even better enjoyed.

Catalogue Raisonné & COA:
It is fully documented and referenced in (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that I will enclose with the sale of the work) :

1) Ramié, Alain. Picasso Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1971. 1988, listed as cat no 520 on pg. 261.

2) Bloch, Georges. Pablo Picasso, Catalogue de l'oeuvre grave céramique 1949-1971. Tome III: 1972, listed as cat no 166 on pg 144.

About the Framing:
This resplendent custom frame is the perfect elegant compliment to this remarkable work. Framing begins with linen wrapped wooden liners that securely hold the ceramic and allow visibility in the back (to view markings) . A contemporary and elegant varnished gold leaf frame encases the wood liners. The delicate coloration of the wood moulding perfectly compliments the gentle texture and color within the terracotta. A heavy weight picture wire is attached to the frame to ensure a secure hanging. Due to the size and weight of this piece, we recommend using a heavy duty double nail hook with 100-150 pound weight capacity (double the weight of the piece to determine hook capacity) .
