Description:

Created in 1893, La Loge au Mascaron Dore (Programme Pour le Missionnaire) , is an original brush, spatter, crayon lithograph with scraper.  This work is from the first final state from the theatre program edition, according to Wittrock and Adriani, with letters. This piece was printed by Ancourt, Paris, and published by Theatre Libre as the program for the play Le Missionnaire. Noted by Wittrock as a very uncommon print, this piece remains in wonderful condition with rich and fresh colors.

Composed of bright pinks, vibrant yellow, rich black and full orange hues, this work takes a jewel-like quality for both its delightful coloration and more intimate small size. With dainty opera glasses raised, the lovely spectator sites in her stately loge, mesmerized by the mysterious scene unfolding below. Lautrec employs multiple levels of intrigue in this work. Perhaps most interesting aspect of this work is what we cannot see—the production occurring on the stage below. Lautrec includes many details, from the posed rapture on the woman’s face to the regal woman sitting to her left, there is a great sense of excitement generated through the sublte positioning and body language of this woman. This sense of mystery retains our attention, making the piece endlessly interesting and enjoyable. This is a wonderful work in great condition with full margins and the traditional Toulouse-Lautrec monogram in the plate in the upper left.
