Letter written and signed by Sarah Childress Polk (1803-1891), First Lady of the United States. Autograph Letter Signed, "Mrs James K. Polk" and "Polk Place Nashville, Tenn. January 23, 1875". Three pages total. Polk writes to General Patterson to decline his request for President Polk's Journal for the "life of the late Hon. James Buchanan." She also states she also recently declined a request from "The Historical Society of Tennessee" of which J.G.M. Ramsey is the honored president..." Mrs. Polk then states she plans to place these papers with the Tennessee Historical Society upon her death. Fine condition. Circa 1875.
