Large Tennessee oil on canvas portrait attributed to the artist Samuel Shaver (Tennessee, 1816-1878). Provenance - Written verso "Grandma Morton was mother of Mrs. Hardiway & grandmother of Texie Sheffield, Mrs. Dave Sheffield." Oral history states this portrait was one of a pair of portraits acquired from a McClung estate in Knoxville during the 1950's. The whereabouts of the male portrait is unknown. Condition - scattered inpainting on the left side of the background and lower area of black dress, small area to the right side of the sitter's hair, some slight cracking of the canvas near the sitter's eye's, lace collar and dress. Damage to the top left hand corner. Damage and various breaks to the gilt frame. Canvas laid down on board. Framed - 45 3/4" height x 38 5/8" width Sight - 31 1/4" height x 25 3/4" sight. Circa 1850.
