Southern signed chest of drawers, signed "J. A. Hughes Bluff City Tenn.". Possibly Tennessee. Late Sheraton/Classical style with overhanging top drawer, over three smaller dovetailed drawers with banded veneer and pressed glass knobs, flanked by reeded side columns with ball and ring turned capitals. Reeded, drum style feet and paneled sides. Mahogany and poplar. Six of the eight glass pulls appear to be original to the piece, two are replacements of a slightly different design. Two pulls lack their brass backing. Signed "J.A. Hughes Bluff City Tenn." on back. Condition: old, possibly original surface with some staining to top, scattered scratches, abrasions and small areas of chipped veneer, some drawer supports replaced. 47" height x 45 1/2" width x 21" depth. Circa 1830.
