Original gray cloth with title stamped in black on the front board and spine, William Heinemann logo on lower rear board. This is the first state which includes 16-page Heinemann Autumn Announcements 1897 catalog at rear. An exceptionally nice copy with only a trace of darkening of the spine cloth. Hinges remain very sound. A few pages uncut. Bright, clean and unmarked throughout. A fine copy of the first edition in book form, published the previous year in Pearson's Magazine.
