Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) ring of waves the etched glass, wood and aluminium multiple, executed circa 1970, in good condition, overall size 450 x 280mm.***'Although there is no geometrical regularity in this poem, the simple permutations of the phrases and the unifying of the repeated 'of' give an effect of taut structure.We are led back again and again into the sequence of juxtaposed images with their shifting pictures of life on sea and land.But the poem remains in itself concrete, a unified surface formed from superposed wedges og material as in a painting by De Stael' Stephen Bann, from the Blue and Brown Poems, 1968..
