Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) paul eluard. facile proie (b.&m.115-123) the complete portfolio, 1939, comprising, eight engravings, each signed in pencil, numbered 10/100 however, there were only 50 portfolios printed, with title-page, text by Eluard and justification, this copy numbered 10, on Montval laid paper, the full sheets in good condition, apart from minor paper discolouration and occasional pale scattered foxing, the sheets loose inside the original grey card boards and matching slipcase with the title engraving adhered to the cover, overall size 267 x 350mm.***This surrealist collaboration with Paul Eluard is One of Hayter's most important pre- WWII portfolios, produced the famous Atelier 17, at 17 Rue Campagne-Première. Printing of the portfolio was only half complete by 1939, and along with the other émigré avant-garde artists Hayter was forced to abandon Paris to escape the advancing Nazi Army. In his haste Hayter abandoned almost his all of his studio contents, including virtually all of his plates, hence the rarity of his works pre- 1939. Some of the plates and the already printed portfolios were saved in a shipment organised by Peggy Guggenheim, however these numbered only a few, those that remained were destroyed and presumably melted down by the Nazis who ransacked the studio. In New York Hayter went on to establish the studio and there the new wave of American artists (such as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Arshile Groky) were introduced to and influenced by the European artists that traveled to New York with Hayter. .
