COLUMBUS DELANO, Signature US Grants Secretary

Autographs
Columbus Delano Signature Grant's Secretary of Interior

COLUMBUS DELANO.
August 4, 1876, Card Signed, "C. Delano," 2.75" x 4.25," Choice Mint. This card signed by Secretary of the Interior Columbus Delano, is dated at "Lakeholm - Mt. Vernon, O(hio)," Delano's mansion outside Mt. Vernon. This was signed less than a year after Delano's resignation from Grant's cabinet. Aside from a couple careless ink marks, this card is like new, having been kept in its original envelope for more than a century. The envelope, included in this lot, is postmarked "Mount Vernon, O." and is in nice condition, aside from a postal ink smudge and some light toning. A nice autograph from a member of a prominent Ohio family, with an established provenance. (2 items).

Columbus Delano (1809-1896) was a Congressman, a member of Grant's cabinet, and president of the First National Bank of Mt. Vernon. A member of the Whig Party, Delano became active in politics and in 1844 was elected to the United States House of Representatives. After serving his 2 year term he launched an unsuccessful bid for the governorship of Ohio in 1847. In 1862 he ran as a Republican for the United States Senate, losing by only two votes. The next year, he was successful in a bid to become a member of the State house of representatives. On November 1, 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him Secretary of the Interior, but he resigned this position on October 19 1875 due to corruption in the Grant administration. Following his resignation, Delano returned to Mount Vernon where for the next 20 years he served as president of the First National Bank of Mount Vernon. His Lakeholm mansion, built in 1871 on the outskirts of Mount Vernon, is now part of Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
