JULIA WARD HOWE, Famous American Poet, and Noted Abolitionist and Reformer.
August 23, 1901, Autograph Letter Signed "Julia Ward Howe", four pages, 3.5" x 5.5", Choice Extremely Fine. Writing from South Portsmouth, Rhode Island, she opens by apologizing for her late response to the recipient's letter, offering "the excuse of a tedious fit of illness which kept me in the hands of Doctor and trained Nurse for about five weeks. From this I am now quite recovered. I shall be very glad to add my name to your list of your patronesses for your recital in November..." One light horizontal crease does nothing to detract from this bright and clean letter.

Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) was not only an accomplished poet, but a noted abolitionist and reformer. She was also the first to proclaim Mother's Day (1870) with her poem "Mother's Day Proclamation"
