1751 Norwich Connecticut Official Court Summons

January 4, 1751, Partially-Printed Document, Norwich, Connecticut, Being a Court Summons, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is an original summons document from early Colonial America, issued to the sheriff of the County of New London, Town of Norwich, Connecticut. This summons, measuring 5.5" x 6.25", orders Samuel Crocker Jr. to appear before Isaac Huntington to answer a claim of Jonathan Huntington for the sum of 5 pounds, 18 shillings, and 6 pence. This document is signed by Daniel Huntington, justice of the peace, and dated "The 4th day of January, Anno Domini 1750/51, and in the 24th year of His Majesty's Reign." There is extensive docketing information on the back. This document remains in very clean, choice condition, having no tears, the right edge has deteriorated somewhat, foxing along the seams, but the text and original signature are fully intact and clear.

Norwich, Connecticut was founded in 1659 by settlers from Old Saybrook, led by Major John Mason and Reverend James Fitch. They purchased the land that would become Norwich from the local Native American Mohegan Tribe. In 1668, a wharf was established at Yantic Cove. By 1694 the public landing built at the head of the Thames River allowed ships to off load goods at the harbor. The distance between the port and Norwichtown was serviced by the East and West Roads which later became Washington Street and Broadway. Norwich merchants received goods directly from England, but the Stamp Act of 1764, forced Norwich to become more self sufficient. Soon large mills and factories sprang up along the three rivers which traverse the town, the Yantic, Shetucket, and Thames Rivers. During the American Revolution, Norwich supported the cause for independence by supplying soldiers, ships, and munitions. One of the most infamous figures of the Revolution, Benedict Arnold, was born in Norwich. Other Colonial era noteworthies include Samuel Huntington, Christopher Leffingwell, and Daniel Lathrop.
