Colonial America
Parliament MembersWho Voted Against Repealing the "Stamp Act"

1766, "A List of the Minority in the House of Commons, Who Voted against the Bill to Repeal the American Stamp Act," [London], Extremely Fine.
Booklet with marbled covers with gold script along the spine, 8.25" x 5", 8 pages. "That is is the opinion of this Committee, that the House be moved, that leave be given to bring in a Bill to Repeal An Act passed in the last Session of Parliament, entitled An Act for granting and applying, certain stamp duties, and other duties in the British Colonies and Plantations in America..." The vote in question is whether or not the word Repeal should be replaced with explain and amend. When put to a vote, the decision not to replace Repeal won with 275 to 167 votes. The Stamp Act of 1765 was the fourth Stamp Act to be passed by the British Parliament and required all legal documents, contracts, newspapers etc. in the American colonies to carry a tax stamp. It was met with great resistance and was repealed on March 18, 1766. Besides the front endpaper being detached, it is in extremely fine condition. Sabin 41453; Adams, American Controversy 66-26.
