George Washington and His Spy, Harvey Birch Print: "WASHINGTON AND HARVEY BIRCH," Printed by J. M. Butler, Very Fine. 4.25" x 3.3" uncolored engraving on 8.5" x 5.5" paper. General foxing and toning, right edge has binding remnants--most likely pulled from a publication. The artists are identified as "A.B. Durand" and "J.I. Pease," but no publication date is listed. Print is a rendering of a meeting between Washington and a spy, Harvey Birch--a scene from the American Revolution--in which Birch idealistically refuses the gold that Washington offers as payment for his services. Birch gestures towards the floor, and stands with his left foot on a small purse. Washington in full uniform stands to Birch's left, with his hat on a table, and glove on the floor beneath the table. An interesting tableau between Birch and Washington, artistically executed with great visual appeal--the first we've seen! Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
