Description
Washington Related1857 Print: "MARTHA WASHINGTON IN HER EARLY DAYS," after a painting by Chappel, Published by Johnson, Fry & Co., NY, Choice Extremely Fine.
7" x 5.3" uncolored image with margins and a caption, to 9.75" x 5.75." A very youthful Martha Washington, with dark hair and a head scarf, wearing a flowing, satiny outfit, posed in front of a garden, and holding a rose. "From the original by Alonzo Chappel in the possession of the publishers." The painting on which this engraving was based was done while Martha was still Miss Dandridge. Likely pulled from a publication, "Life and Times of Washington," as there is a rough left edge, and ghosting of printed text on the back--not affecting the print at all. A very sharp and attractive item.
