Portraits of Famous American Women

c. 1840-1904, Lot of 4 Portrait Prints of Famous American Women, Mrs. James Monroe, Catherine Schuyler, Madame Gernet and Mary Philipse, Steel Engravings and Mezzotint Print, Extremely Fine.
These prints are all single sided plates, likely removed from books, ranging in size from 5.5" x 4.5" to 10.5" x 7.5," and suitable for framing. 1. MRS. MONROE, the wife of President James Monroe, a hand colored mezzotint print, from a miniature by Sene, dated 1904, excellent condition, protected by tissue. 2. CATHERINE V.R. SCHUYLER, the wife of General Philip Schuyler, an unsigned steel engraving published by Mason Brothers of New York, choice condition. 3. MADAME GENET, American wife of the French Ambassador to the United States, large size steel engraving, unsigned, in excellent condition, with a light damp stain in the upper left corner. 4. MARY PHILIPSE, steel engraving by John Rogers, published by Virtue & Yorston of New York, in excellent condition though trimmed closely on the right side. A very interesting group of women's portraits which would look great framed and displayed. (4 prints).

Mary Philipse (1730-1825) was an early love interest of young Colonel George Washington, but in 1758 she married Roger Morris, a Captain in the British Army. Madame Genet was Cornelia Clinton, daughter of Governor George Clinton of New York, who married "Citizen" Edmund Genet, who ultimately settled in the United States. Catherine Schuyler (born 1734) was the daughter of John Van Rensselaer, a wealthy New York landholder.
