Early Railroad Train on Mt. Washington New Hampshire c. 1870, Lot of 2 Stereo Photo Cards, Two Scenes of a Primitive Train on Mt. Washington (New Hampshire), Choice Very Fine. These 2 mustard colored stereo photo cards, measuring 3.25" x 6.75," are numbers 134 and 521 from the same set. The first, showing a rickety-looking bridge, is labeled, "Jacob's Ladder, Mt. Washington R.R." The other image is a close-up of the engine and its one passenger car, labeled, "Summit of Mt. Washington & R.R. Train." The back of both cards is stamped, "Photographed and Published by Kilburn Brothers - Littleton, N.H." These photographers were in business under this name from 1865 to 1876, so this photograph was likely made about the time the train began running in 1869. This train to the top of Mt. Washington was an early tourist attraction in New Hampshire. Both cards are nearly flat, rather than curled as are most stereo cards, and are in excellent condition. The photos are sharp and clear and full of detail. A wonderful look back to turn-of-the-century New England. (2 items) Mt. Washington was one of the first intentional tourist destinations in the United States, resulting in the construction of bridle paths and several summit hotels including the Tip Top House, which is still standing. Other tourist construction in the 1800s included a stagecoach road (now the Mount Washington Auto Road) and the Mount Washington Cog Railway, both of which are still used. The railway opened on July 3, 1869 with a small, custom-built steam locomotive of unusual design. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
