1876 Debate over Amnesty for Jefferson Davis January 10-14, 1876, "Jefferson Davis - Amnesty," Debate in the House of Representatives, Very Fine. Original, untrimmed pamphlet, 9.5" x 6", 32 pages, folded and stitched, containing the text of debates over the motion of James Blaine to deny amnesty to Jefferson Davis, former President of the Confederate States of America. Minor toning, some edge chips, but the text is quite clear and legible. The pamphlet chronicles Blaine's attempt to amend a bill extending Political Amnesty to former Confederate lawmakers--except Jeff Davis, who he felt should have continued sanctions against him. Blaine's amendment was defeated and his tough stand on reconciliation with the South came back to haunt him; he was defeated in the 1884 Presidential Election. This pamphlet contains Blaine's presentations on January 12-14, 1876, and Benjamin J. Hill's (of Georgia) presentation on the 12th. This interesting volume provides a glimpse into the contentious debate over the terms of the Post-Civil War reconciliation, and is an excellent addition to any Political collection or Civil War library.
