This is a fine old Japanese Netsuke hand carved vintage. It would appear to be a penitent, perhaps a child in the position of obedience. It has been suggested that this Netsuke might even be that of the legendary robber Tokubei, but as we all know, he would escape by magically turning himself into a frog, and the vast majority of Tokubei Netsuke are shown as part man / part frog. We, however, see no evidence of a frog here. Though unsigned, this Netsuke is a lovely old piece that we estimate to be ca. 1900 - 1910. ... includes certificate that this lot came from the Estate of Louise Mondani Graham, owner of the Brass Bugle Antique Barn in Cornwall Bridge CT.
