Marvelous hand painted portrait brooch of a very beautiful maiden in a lovely dress. There are a series of numbers molded on the back of plaque: 5544 over 53. Frame appears to be pewter or metal with a lovely marcasite design on the edge. Brooch measures approx. 2.25" long by 2" wide. The pinback is original. I find no signature or other markings. Painting is beautiful and tiny brush strokes are visible in strong light. This is not a reprodution or decal. The frame has no damage except for one missing marcasite, easy to repair and there are no chips, cracks, hairlines, or damage to the painted plaque It was a well-known custom in the 19th century to have miniatures made of loved ones to present them to family members on special occasions. 1OO Years of Collectible Jewelry by Lillian Baker pg 26 ... includes certificate that this lot came from the Estate of Louise Mondani Graham, owner of the Brass Bugle Antique Barn in Cornwall Bridge CT.
Condition reportExcellent, missing one marcasite
