Alexander Sergeevich HRENOV (1860-1926)

A Pair of Winter Landscapes with Elks. Khrenov Alexander Alexandrovich 1860 (Russia) 1926 (France) An architect and a watercolorist. Studied architecture and painting at the Academy of Art in St.Petersburg 1880 – 1887. Received a "zvanie" (rank, title, profession) of a painter and an architect of the 1st degree. He was assigned as an architect for St.Isaak Cathedral to replace M.E. Mesmaher. He built and reconstructed over 40 buildings in St.Petersburg. Several buildings on Nevsky prospect, Tavricheskaya street etc… He built a palace for the Great Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich on Petrovskaya naberejnaia. He was teaching painting. His favorite subjects were wild animals, hunting, and other animalistic scenes. Nickolas II orderd him a series of watercolors on the subject of a royal hunting. The Great Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich had a big collection of his watercolors. He was one of the founders of A.I. Kuindji "objestva" (circle). He loved horses and own a "konnii zavod" (horse farm). In 1918 he traveled to a Far East. He had a personal exhibition in Vladivostock in 1919. At the end of 1919 he immigrated to Harbin and then moved to Shanghais. He built several buildings in Shanghais. Since 1925 he lived in Paris.
