"Liberty First, Union Afterwards"

WENDELL PHILLIPS, Lawyer, Orator, Author, Reformer, Civil Rights Activist.
March 1860, Autograph Inscription, "Liberty first - Union afterwards. Wendell Phillips", in fountain pen ink, no location, Choice Very Fine. A fine specimen with a terrific quote--written during a time when Civil War was almost certain to occur!

Wendell Phillips (1811-84) was one of the more vocal and influential voices calling for the end of slavery from the 1840s through the Civil War. Considered a "rabid abolitionist," Phillips turned his energies after the War to the fair treatment of Indians and the labor movement.

Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
