American Revolution
1777 Paymaster of 12th Pennsylvania Regiment May 15, 1777, Revolutionary War, Manuscript Document, Pay Order for Officer in the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment, About Fine. This handwritten document, measuring 5.75" x 8.25," dated at Matouchin (Metuchen, NJ), is a pay order from Col. Hm. Cook, directing Robert Levers, the outgoing paymaster of the 12th Pennsylvania Regiment, to pay Thomas Dungan, the new paymaster for the regiment. Col. Cook has signed the order on the front. On the back, there is another document, dated May 22, 1777, in which Dungan indicates that he had received his pay, and has signed, "Thos. Dungan PM 12th PR." A small amount of archival tape has been applied to a few locations, there is moderate toning, and a small hole affecting a few letters. The right end is chipped and irregular. Otherwise this Revolutionary War Document has dark, clear writing and is in nice condition. In the following month, June 1777, a small battle was fought at Metuchen between British troops under Gen. William Howe and a small American force led by William Alexander. Thomas Dungan, the paymaster who signed this document, wintered over with George Washington's army in the camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania that memorable winter of 1777-1778, took the Oath of Allegiance in the spring of 1778.
