"Washington Family" Engraved by A.B. Walter c. 1860, Washington Family Print, Published by John Dainty, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Choice Very Fine. 15.5" x 11.75", print entitled, "Washington Family," engraved by A.B. Walter and based on the painting by F.B. Schell. Engraving shows the family later in life, perhaps during the years of Washington's presidency. When George and Martha met, many years before the Revolutionary War, Martha was a widow with two children from her marriage to Daniel Parke Custis. In 1773, Martha's daughter, Martha Parke Custis, passed away at the age of 17. Martha's son, John Parke Custis, was killed at the age of 26, while serving as an aide to Washington during the siege of Yorktown in 1781. George and Martha had no children of their own, but John Parke Custis had four, and after his death Washington adopted the youngest two, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis, whose daughter married Robert E. Lee. This print features George and Martha seated at a table with their two adopted grandchildren standing beside them. Minor edge separations along the border, and top right corner has been torn away, but does not affect the print in the slightest. A fairly pristine sample, prime for framing and display. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
