Revolutionary War Commander Seeks Help In Recruiting During The "Quasi-War" Period With France

December 27, 1798 Autograph Letter Signed, to WILLIAM SHEPARD, U.S. Congressman and Brigadier General of the Massachusetts Militia who prevented the capture of the Springfield Arsenal during Shays' Rebellion.
Autograph Letter Signed, "John McKinstry" on fine, laid, watermarked paper, December 27, 1798, Town of Livingston, 13" x 8", Very Fine. The paper has a nice even tone, with little to no chipping. As well, the print is still bold and vibrant. The wax seal has been removed, and an absence is located at the bottom of the integral (self-made envelope) where the seal was originally. Interesting political content, McKinstry writes to General Shepherd asking for his assistance in obtaining a commission as a commander of a regiment. The letter reads, in full:
"Town of Livingston Dec.(embe)r 27th. 1798 — Dear Sir, I have an idea of once more serving my country in the field, should the President & Senate of the United States think proper to honor me with the same command that I had when I left the Army, which was the command of a Regiment. As you are the oldest friend, that I have; and have been so much in the service with you, I take the liberty of solicity your influence in obtaining this appointment for me should you think me worth of it. Your opinion and approbation in respect to this will be of more Service than any, on many others. As to my Political creed since I left the Army I must refer you to Mr. Hosmer, Mr. Van Glen, Mr. Brooks or Mr. Glenn for information. Should I obtain this appointment I shall endeavor to discharge the duties of the office to the utmost of my abilities. I am dear Sir with respect & Esteem your friend & humble servant, - John McKinstry."
