Civil War Miscellaneous
Civil War Recruiting "THE QUOTA OF NEW YORK" 1864, New York Union Civil War Recruiting Advertisement, Very Fine. 6.5" x 8.25," an official record of New York County's expenditure for an advertisement titled "THE QUOTA OF NEW YORK" in the "New York Dispatch" newspaper. An actual copy of this lengthy advertisement was attached to this form, which was then filed away with the rest of the accounting papers. This ad offered an explanation of the quotas for New York demanded under the President's draft calls. The ad pointed out that the quotas were based on enrollment lists that were believed to be overstated, thus increasing (unfairly they believed) New York's quota. The purpose of the ad was to encourage a commission to investigate the matter, reduce the enrollment figures, and bring the draft quota down to a more reasonable number. Also attached is the original bill from the New York Dispatch. A very rare and unusual item, and unique insofar as this particular advertisement is concerned. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
