An assortment of sheet music by Gussie L. Davis--the most financially successful 19th century African American composer. Four Titles: "Nearing the Harbor" (1888), published by T.B. Harms (NY); "The Reason Why Bess Went Away" (1894), Cruger Bros. (NY); "The Village Inn, or That Old Violin Song" (1888), Hitchcock's Music Stores (NY); and "We Were Comrades" (1888), Newhall & Evans Music Co. (Cincinnati). Each 6 pages, 13.5" x 10.5". All untrimmed, uncut, as issued. Water stain on cover of "The Reason Why Bess Went Away," others with minor edge splits and chipping. An important collection by a composer who is largely forgotten today. (4 items)
