Historic Americana
Centennial 39-Star "George Washington" Printed Banner

1876, Centennial Celebration, 39-Stars "George Washington" Colorful Printed Cotton Banner, Choice Very Fine.
This original 25.5" x 16" decorative cotton banner is full and complete, showing a central image of George Washington in his military uniform as General, encircled by 39 Stars. The Shield of the United States of America is both above and below Washington's image. Just above Washington's head is the Liberty Bell with its crack prominent, and Washington is reading the following note: "Washington - Victory is ours - Paul Jones". This portrait of Washington does not correspond to any known painting or engraving and was made for the Centennial celebration of American Independence, in 1876. (See Collins, 1979: 188.) Some red colors have turned to mauve, and the left border is hemmed slightly obscuring the blue colored surround. Very rare, so full and complete.

Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
