Map of The New World With California as an Island (1720), Hand-Colored Map of North And South America, With California as an Island, by Johannes Baptista Homann, Published in Nuremberg, Choice Extremely Fine. This is a nice example of an early edition of Homann's map of America, showing California as an Island. The title is: "Totius Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Novissima Repraesentatio Quam ex Singulis Recentium Geographorum Tabulis Collecta Luci Publicae Accommodavit." This map measures 21" x 25." McLaughlin 175, Tooley 79, Leighly 133, Portinaro Plate CIX. The Straits of Anian are shown forming a Northwest Passage between California and the mythical Terra Esonis, which forms a nearly continuous land bridge from the Pacific coast to Asia. The Great Lakes are shown with some detail, though much larger than they really are. The Mississippi River shows the results of the early French Jesuit explorations, with its sources extending far North of the limits of the maps produced 20 and 30 years earlier. The title cartouche is based upon De Fer's landmark map of 1699, and shows in the background what is apparently a new world town, with several windmills. The top cartouche is based upon De L'Isle's 1703 map of Canada. Nice impression with vibrant colors, added by hand to the land areas but not the cartouches. There are a couple small margin tears, not affecting the printed area, and the lower end of the center fold has puckered slightly, but not separated. Otherwise this map is in excellent condition and would look wonderful framed and displayed. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
