Description:

Characterized by the brilliant use of color and the collapsed spatial representation, this work represents Braque’s most frequently represented subject, the still life.

This original color etching and aquatint is part of a series of works that were based upon Braque’s original watercolors, gouaches and paintings.  Braque was very involved in the printing process, overseeing the engraver, correcting the proofs when necessary.  This work is hand signed by Georges Braque (1882 – 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin; also signed in the plate in black in the lower right of the image.  Numbered 54/200 in pencil in the lower left margin.  Featuring the engraved notation in the lower left of the plate edge: ‘gravé par Jacques Villon 1928.’ Printed on Arches block watermarked paper with a clearly defined plate mark all around.

The artist’s use of vibrant colors and intense patterning creates an image which hypnotizes the eye.  While the subject is clearly a table a toped by a glasses decanter, fruit and possibly a small guitar, the viewer is forced to recreate the spatial orientation of the items.  The table top has been pushed forward becoming almost parallel to the picture plain. This vantage point clearly reveals each item that sits on the table and intensifies the image for the work projects out towards the viewer.  The intense patterning of the image further heightens the sense of spatial compression while adding a sense of joviality and spontaneity.

“Braques preoccupation with space was in effect of two kinds: it was a lyrical response to open space – harbors, beaches, fields, skies – which the eye could enjoy and the spirit could delight in; and it was a more profound, more intellectual concern to represent space that lay in a closely defined area, separating yet uniting objects that lie within the reach of man’s hand.  Still-life was Braque’s microcosm: it was the world at his fingertips” (Mullins, 160).
