Description:

Created in 1873, this etching is printed in a dark brown sepia ink with a strong plate mark all around; there is evidence of selective wiping throughout the image.  This work was printed by Bernheim Jeune, Paris in 1914 in an edition of 600.  Other examples of this work were exhibited at the Hôtel Drouot in 1926 and the Weyhe Gallery in New York.

Depicting a detailed view of an outdoor scene, this intimate work entices the viewer to closely inspect the details throughout the image.  Bold and dark with strong contrast, this work evokes a sense of the artist’s serenity in the outdoor environment.  Comprised of natural and manmade elements, this work portrays the landscape of the French countryside in the late 19th century.  Using an up close view of a farm scene, this work expresses Cézanne’s studied use of rural architecture in tandem with natural elements.  Formally composed of bold horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines, the sense of action created through the intersection of lines causes the viewer’s eye to continuously move throughout the image.
